Conclusions of the report on the market of combustion systems for Mediterranean biomasses

Within the frame of Biomasud Plus activities, CERTH, with the assistance of the project consortium, performed a detailed study of the state-of-the-art combustion systems (boilers and stoves) available for domestic heating. The report covers the participating Mediterranean countries (Croatia, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey) and includes detailed information regarding the following aspects of domestic heating systems operating with solid biofuels:

  • The applicable national legislation for biomass combustion systems for the domestic sector.
  • Available statistical data on biomass use and number of heating systems installed in each country.
  • Support mechanisms for the installation of biomass heating systems in a country.

The report also includes sections on the principles of biomass combustion in domestic heating systems, overview of the main heating system types and their subcategories and information on the legislation and standards applicable on the EU scale, such as EN 303-5 for biomass boilers and the impact of the Ecodesign Directive on biomass boilers and stoves.

In all investigated countries, biomass is an integral part of the thermal energy mixture for households, often being the second or third most important source and with increasing tendencies. National legislations and support schemes are not harmonized; in most cases, and until the implementation of the Ecodesign Directive, the biomass boilers should meet the emission and efficiency limits of Class 3 of EN 303-5.

The report includes contact and summary business information on the main manufacturers of domestic heating systems located in each country. An Annex to the report contains detailed technical characteristics (e.g. suggested fuels, thermal outputs, dimensions, feeding and combustion systems, available emission data, etc.) of 78 different heating system series from a total of 32 manufacturers coming from the targeted Mediterranean countries, as well as 11 heating systems which can operate with Mediterranean biomasses manufactured by 4 Austrian companies. The reported thermal outputs of the heating systems range from 6 to more than 500 kW for boilers and from 7 to around 20 kW for stoves.
